Newport Reef Project
June 3rd, 2014Pearched high on the Bungan beach headland is a newly constructed light-filled family home designed by renowned architect Richard Cole. The home is on a fairly steep site over multiple levels, to take advantage of sweeping coastal and district views, and was built by Scott HIndmarsh of Builtform Constructions.
With the Newport Reef glistening in the foreground, this elevated home on the headland epitomizes the optimal use of copper and sandstone, and uses dark wood external features with glass wherever possible, to maximize the sun and light of the interior.
DBLS was retained to construct all the sandstone externals on paths, garage, and terracing as well as the landscaping. The textural combination of the materials used in the project lends itself to a more ‘minimalist’ or hardier style of garden that is able to withstand the more intense environmental elements from the changing ocean and seasonal winds.
This is a project that showcases the best of coastal architecture and how the right decisions for landscaping that are made in tandem with the home design can have an impact on the overall result of the finished product.
